Feeling dizzy or lightheaded might be more than just a moment of discomfort—it could be an early warning sign of migraines. That’s what new research from Peking University has found.
The study, led by Tongxiang Diao, shows a strong connection between dizziness, vertigo, and the risk of developing migraines.
The researchers studied nurses at a large hospital and asked them to fill out detailed surveys about their health. The questions focused on headaches, dizziness, and vertigo to find out how these symptoms might be linked.
Out of 708 nurses who took part in the study, about 29% said they had headaches. Among them, 13% had migraines. But the most surprising finding came from those who reported dizziness or vertigo.
People with vertigo were nearly three times more likely to have migraines. Those who experienced dizziness were more than eight times more likely to suffer from migraines.
This is important because migraines are not just bad headaches. They are a brain-related condition that can cause intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. These symptoms can make it hard to work, enjoy life, or even carry out everyday tasks.
One type of migraine, called a vestibular migraine, is especially linked to balance problems like dizziness and vertigo. It can be hard to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other health issues.
The study suggests that if doctors pay more attention to dizziness and vertigo, they may be able to diagnose vestibular migraines earlier. This could help people get the right treatment faster.
If you often feel dizzy or have vertigo, this research shows why you shouldn’t ignore these symptoms. They could be signs that you’re at higher risk for migraines. Talking to a doctor about these problems could lead to treatments that ease your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
The research was published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience. It reminds us how important it is for doctors to carefully look at all symptoms. Recognizing dizziness and vertigo as possible signs of migraines could lead to better care and faster help for people with this painful condition.
So if you notice frequent dizziness or balance problems, don’t brush them off. These symptoms could be more serious than they seem. Seeing a healthcare provider may help you catch migraines early and manage them more effectively.
