Recently, researchers from Shifa College of Medicine did a study to find out if prunes could help improve heart health. They studied 259 people who had different levels of blood pressure.
These participants were divided into different groups. Some were given prunes or prune juice to consume every day. A control group only drank a glass of plain water every morning on an empty stomach.
The results were very encouraging. People who ate prunes had a big drop in their blood pressure compared to the control group. Those who ate just three prunes a day saw the biggest improvements.
Eating six prunes a day also helped, but the most noticeable effect was only on systolic blood pressure. This means that a small amount of prunes each day might be enough to make a real difference for heart health.
The researchers also noticed something interesting about cholesterol levels. The people who did not eat prunes had an increase in their HDL cholesterol, often called “good” cholesterol. Good cholesterol helps clean harmful cholesterol out of the body, lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Meanwhile, the groups that ate prunes showed a decrease in their total cholesterol and in LDL cholesterol, the “bad” kind. Having too much LDL cholesterol in the blood can clog the arteries and lead to heart problems.
This study suggests that adding prunes to your diet could be an easy and natural way to help manage blood pressure and protect your heart. High blood pressure often doesn’t cause clear symptoms until it leads to a major problem, like a heart attack or stroke. That’s why managing it early is very important.
Eating just a few prunes each day could be a simple habit that makes a big difference for your long-term health. Besides being good for the heart, prunes are easy to carry around, require no cooking, and taste naturally sweet, making them a convenient choice for busy people.
