Heartburn drugs and kidney risks: what you should know

roton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are common medications used to treat heartburn, acid reflux, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Many people recognize names like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid, and these drugs are part of the daily routine for about 10% of adults in the U.S. They help manage painful symptoms, allowing people to eat and sleep more comfortably.

However, a recent study from the University of California San Diego has raised concerns about the long-term effects of PPIs, particularly their impact on kidney health. Researchers analyzed data from the FAERS database, which contains over 10 million reports of medication side effects.

They focused on about 43,000 people who took only PPIs and compared them to around 8,000 people who used a different type of heartburn medication, histamine-2 receptor blockers (like Zantac and Pepcid).

The results were alarming. Among PPI users, 5.6% reported kidney-related problems, compared to just 0.7% of those taking histamine-2 blockers. Even more concerning, people who used PPIs were 28.4 times more likely to report chronic kidney disease than those in the control group.

Reports of acute kidney injury, end-stage kidney disease, and other kidney-related conditions were also significantly higher in PPI users.

This is not the first study to suggest potential dangers associated with PPIs. Previous research, including a 2017 study from the same university, linked PPI use to chronic liver disease. These findings highlight the need for caution when prescribing and using these medications over long periods.

While PPIs are effective at reducing stomach acid and relieving discomfort, their risks should not be ignored. Healthcare providers are now encouraged to carefully consider whether long-term PPI use is necessary, especially for patients who may already be at risk for kidney disease.

Patients should also be aware of these potential risks and discuss alternatives with their doctors if they are concerned.

This research, published in Scientific Reports by Ruben Abagyan and his team, serves as an important reminder that even widely used medications can have serious side effects.

As scientists continue to investigate the long-term effects of PPIs, both doctors and patients must stay informed and make well-balanced decisions about their use. Ensuring safe and responsible medication use is crucial to protecting overall health.
