These widely used drugs may increase risk of heart rhythm disorders

New research has found a troubling connection between anabolic steroids—substances often used to build muscle—and a higher risk of developing a serious heart condition called atrial fibrillation. This condition causes an irregular heartbeat and can lead to more dangerous heart problems.

The study was conducted by scientists from the University of Birmingham and Germany and was published in The Journal of Physiology.

Anabolic steroids are synthetic drugs that mimic the hormone testosterone. Many young men use these drugs to increase their muscle size and strength.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have made steroid use more popular by promoting extreme fitness and bodybuilding. However, these drugs come with significant risks, especially for heart health.

The research focused on a condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). ARVC is a genetic heart disease that weakens the connections between heart muscle cells, making the heart less stable.

This condition is more common in men, and the effects can be severe. The study shows that using anabolic steroids can make ARVC worse and increase the chance of developing atrial fibrillation.

The researchers found that just six weeks of anabolic steroid use can harm the way cells in the heart work together. The steroids weaken the cell connections and reduce the function of sodium channels, which are important for sending electrical signals through the heart.

When these signals slow down, it can lead to irregular heart rhythms and increase the risk of electrical problems in the heart. Young men with certain genetic risks may be even more affected.

Professor Larissa Fabritz, one of the researchers, explained that high testosterone levels from steroid use can make heart diseases like ARVC even worse. These problems with the heart’s rhythm can become life-threatening if left unchecked.

The study sends a clear warning about the hidden dangers of anabolic steroids. While they are often seen as a way to quickly build muscle, their impact on the heart can be serious and long-lasting. Young people need to understand these risks, especially as steroid use becomes more common due to social media trends.

Heart health is a complex issue influenced by many factors, including lifestyle choices, genetics, and the substances we put into our bodies. While some supplements or foods may offer benefits, others, like anabolic steroids, can cause harm.

For example, some studies suggest that herbal supplements can sometimes disrupt heart rhythm, while eating eggs or yogurt may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Even simple things like drinking apple juice have been linked to heart health benefits.

This new research reminds us to think carefully about the substances we use, especially those like steroids that are often marketed as shortcuts to fitness. Understanding how these drugs affect the heart is crucial, particularly for young men who are drawn to bodybuilding.
