Prunes, often recognized as sweet, chewy dried plums, offer more than just a tasty snack. These fruits, which contain no added sugar, are packed with essential nutrients like vitamin B6, manganese, and copper.

To explore prunes’ specific benefits for heart health, researchers from Shifa College of Medicine conducted a study involving 259 participants with varying blood pressure levels.
The participants were divided into groups, with some consuming prunes or prune juice daily, while a control group drank plain water every morning on an empty stomach.
The results were promising. Participants who ate prunes experienced a noticeable drop in their blood pressure compared to the control group.
Interestingly, consuming a single dose of three prunes daily brought the most significant changes. Doubling the dose to six prunes daily further reduced systolic blood pressure but didn’t have the same effect on diastolic pressure.
The study also revealed insights into cholesterol levels.
While those who did not consume prunes showed increased levels of HDL, or “good” cholesterol, the prune-eating groups had a reduction in total cholesterol and LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. Lower levels of LDL cholesterol are essential for reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
These findings suggest that adding prunes to your diet can be a simple and natural way to help manage high blood pressure and protect your heart.
