LG Display has unveiled the world’s first stretchable screen, capable of expanding by up to 50%.

The display marks a major step forward in screen technology, as it can stretch, fold, and twist into different shapes without losing its functionality.

The latest prototype features a 12-inch display that can stretch to 18 inches, offering high-resolution visuals with 100 pixels per inch (ppi) and full-color output in red, green, and blue (RGB).

This is a major improvement compared to LG’s 2022 stretchable screen prototype, which had a maximum elongation of 20%.

The new model surpasses expectations by achieving a 50% stretch rate, opening up exciting possibilities for future designs and applications.

To achieve this milestone, LG Display introduced several advanced technologies. The screen is made using a special silicon material, similar to what is used in contact lenses, for better stretchability.

The design also includes a new wiring structure and micro-LED light sources as small as 40 micrometers, ensuring durability. The display can be stretched over 10,000 times while maintaining clear visuals, even in extreme conditions like temperature changes or physical impacts.

The stretchable display’s thin, lightweight design allows it to stick to curved surfaces, including clothing and skin, making it ideal for industries like fashion, wearable technology, and automotive design.

For example, LG has showcased ideas like wearable displays for firefighters’ uniforms that provide real-time updates or car panels that adjust shape for better functionality.

This project is part of South Korea’s initiative to develop next-generation display technologies, led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE).

Since 2020, LG Display has collaborated with 19 domestic partners to develop these innovative displays.

By completing the project, LG has secured critical technologies that can lead the next-generation market, while also boosting South Korea’s ability to produce materials, components, and equipment locally.

Soo-young Yoon, CTO of LG Display, said the company is committed to creating a sustainable future for the display industry through collaboration between businesses, universities, and researchers.

Stretchable displays are expected to revolutionize industries, making this breakthrough a significant achievement for LG Display and the future of technology.
