Scientists from the University of Hong Kong have found that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), a new drug for lowering blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, may reduce the risks of kidney and respiratory diseases.

These diseases include end-stage renal disease (ESRD), obstructive airway disease (OAD), and pneumonia.

The study offers real-world evidence that SGLT2i might be a better alternative to an older class of glucose-lowering drugs, known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i), in protecting people with type 2 diabetes.

SGLT2i is a newer class of drugs used to lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. Recent research has shown that, besides controlling blood sugar levels, SGLT2i also provides heart and kidney protection for patients.

However, it was unclear whether SGLT2i could offer better protection for the heart and kidneys compared to older drugs like DPP4i, which have been widely used in recent years.

In this study, the researchers examined how SGLT2i affects kidney and lung health. They analyzed data from over 30,000 patients with type 2 diabetes in Hong Kong.

The findings showed that, compared to DPP4i, SGLT2i was strongly linked to lower risks of several kidney diseases. These results agree with previous research, providing real-world evidence that SGLT2i could offer additional kidney protection.

The study also found that SGLT2i significantly reduced the risks of several lung diseases. The researchers suggest that clinical trials should be conducted to further investigate these respiratory outcomes.

Overall, the study suggests that SGLT2i could be a better alternative to DPP4i for people with type 2 diabetes. If you are concerned about kidney health, other studies have shown that certain drugs can prevent kidney failure in diabetes, and drinking coffee might reduce the risk of kidney injury.

Additionally, recent research has explored foods that may prevent the recurrence of kidney stones and found that Viagra could be useful in treating lung diseases.

This study was conducted by Dr. Cheung Ching-lung and his team, and the findings were published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and JAMA Network Open.
