Researchers from The George Institute for Global Health have discovered that treating high blood pressure with a special tablet called the “quadpill” is not only more effective than usual care but is also similar in cost.

What is the Quadpill?

The quadpill is a tablet that contains very small amounts of four common, low-cost medicines used to treat high blood pressure.

In Australia, one in three adults has high blood pressure, putting them at risk for diseases like heart disease, stroke, and chronic kidney disease.

However, only one-third of high blood pressure cases were under control in 2017-2018, indicating a significant issue with proper care.

Cost and Benefits of Quadpill

The researchers conducted a study on 591 adults with high blood pressure in Australia, analyzing the cost of care for these individuals.

Half of them received treatment with the quadpill, while the other half received a single-drug treatment.

The study found that using the quadpill would likely be cost-effective for the Australian health system, as it improved blood pressure control and reduced the lifetime chances of heart attack and stroke.

The average cost per person at 12 weeks in the quadpill group was slightly higher than in the single-drug group, but the benefits of improved health outcomes outweighed the cost difference.

Potential Impact of the Quadpill

Dr. Emily Atkins, the lead researcher, emphasized that the quadpill could be a promising treatment option for Australians with high blood pressure.

It not only helps control the condition effectively but also reduces the risk of related health issues in a cost-effective way.

She also noted that the strategy of starting treatment with a quadpill challenges traditional practices and could potentially change clinical guidelines and practices in the future.

Overall, the quadpill offers a more efficient and affordable solution for managing high blood pressure, which is a prevalent health concern in Australia.
