Drinking beetroot juice may reduce heart attack risk in these people

A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and elsewhere found that daily consumption of beetroot juice for six months after stent placement can strongly reduce heart attacks and the need for repeat procedures in angina patients.

The study findings, presented at the British Cardiovascular Society conference, indicate that 16% of angina patients faced heart or circulatory issues within two years after stent placement, but this number dropped to 7.5% when patients consumed beetroot juice regularly.

The study was conducted by researchers at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Queen Mary University in London.

It involved angina patients who had undergone stent placement, a procedure known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

The trial spanned six months, with participants consuming beetroot juice daily during this period.

The research revealed that angina patients who consumed beetroot juice daily after stent placement experienced a significant reduction in the risk of heart attacks and the need for repeat procedures.

When blood vessel width was measured six months after stenting, patients who had consumed beetroot juice showed approximately half as much narrowing in their blood vessels as those who received a placebo treatment.

Beetroot juice helps patients due to its high level of inorganic nitrate, which is converted to nitrite and then nitric oxide (NO) in the body, a signaling molecule that has positive effects on blood vessels.

The findings suggest that beetroot juice could be a natural and safe adjunct treatment for angina patients after stent placement, potentially preventing restenosis (narrowing of the stented blood vessel).

The researchers plan to conduct larger trials to confirm the initial observations, with the aim of prescribing beetroot juice as a post-stent implantation treatment.

This treatment approach may extend beyond angina patients to others who have undergone stent placement for various reasons, such as after a heart attack.

The study highlights the potential benefits of beetroot juice in reducing the risk of heart attacks and repeat procedures in angina patients who have undergone stent placement.

This natural and safe treatment approach offers hope for improving the long-term outcomes of patients who receive stents to address coronary heart disease. Further research is planned to confirm and expand on these findings.
