Chatting to Reveal True Personality

Ever sat through a job interview answering questions from a personality test? These tests are a common way companies try to figure out who you really are. But there’s a problem: people can fake their answers.

Tianjun Sun, a psychologist at Kansas State University, teamed up with experts from several other schools to see if a computer chatbot can do a better job at understanding your personality.

They worked with over 1,500 college students, having each one chat with an AI chatbot for about 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, the students also filled out traditional self-reported personality tests.

The team used these chats to train the AI, teaching it to guess the personality traits that the students reported about themselves.

What the Research Found

The results were pretty impressive. The AI chatbot’s guesses about people’s personalities lined up pretty well with what people said about themselves on the traditional tests.

Sometimes, the AI even did a better job at predicting how well someone would do in college based on their personality. This has major implications for job hiring.

If an AI chatbot can accurately measure personality, companies might start using them to find the best fit for a job, saving time and possibly getting more accurate results.

Is This the Right Way Forward?

But Tianjun Sun isn’t saying we should all start chatting with bots just yet. “This is a good start, but we need to look into a few more things,” says Sun.

For example, they still need to find out if this method is fair to everyone or if some people could still trick the system. Also, there are legal and ethical questions to think about.

If you’re job hunting, don’t be surprised if you find yourself talking to a chatbot sometime soon. This research shows that AI chatbots could be a useful tool in figuring out who’s the best fit for a job.

But before that becomes the norm, researchers like Tianjun Sun want to make sure it’s a system that works well for everyone.
