Drinking alcohol can harm your blood pressure, study confirms

It’s simple: the more alcohol you drink, the more your blood pressure might go up. This was found in a study of people from all over the world.

Even if you drink a little bit, your blood pressure can rise. And if your blood pressure goes up too much, it’s bad for your heart.

What the Experts Say

Dr. Marco Vinceti from Italy worked on the study. He said that people who drank just a bit of alcohol had higher blood pressure than those who didn’t drink at all.

And people who drank a lot had much higher blood pressure.

Another expert, Dr. Tommaso Filippini, talked about how they measured alcohol. They looked at the amount of alcohol in grams, not just the number of drinks.

This is because a drink in one country might have more or less alcohol than a drink in another country.

They checked people’s health for over five years. They found that for every small amount of alcohol someone drank, their blood pressure went up a little bit.

And if they drank a lot, their blood pressure went up a lot. This was more true for men than for women.

What You Should Do

Dr. Vinceti said that alcohol isn’t the only thing that makes blood pressure go up, but it’s a big part. He suggests that it’s better to not drink at all, or to drink very little.

People who had slightly higher blood pressure at the start of the study saw a bigger increase when they drank alcohol.

Dr. Paul Whelton, another expert, says this means people who already have a bit high blood pressure should be extra careful.

The American Heart Association says if you don’t drink now, don’t start. If you do drink, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor.

And instead of drinking for health, it’s better to eat healthy, exercise, sleep well, not smoke, and keep a check on your weight, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

More about the Study

This big study looked at 19,548 adults from the US, Korea, and Japan. These people were aged 20 to 70. They were checked from 1997 to 2021. No one had heart problems, diabetes, or other serious health issues at the start.

The study found out how much alcohol people drank. They then looked at how this drinking changed their blood pressure over the years.

High blood pressure is dangerous because it can cause heart problems. So, it’s really important to keep our blood pressure in a good range.
