Evening exercises lower blood pressure better in elderly, study shows

Blood pressure is like a meter reading of how hard your heart works. When it’s too high, doctors may ask you to take medicine or exercise.

But when is the best time to exercise? A new study has some interesting answers.

What the Study Shows

This study focused on older people who had high blood pressure. Some people with high blood pressure, especially the elderly or overweight, don’t get much help from exercise.

The study aimed to see if exercising at different times could help them.

Leandro Brito, who led the study, said that finding a better time to exercise might reduce their need for medicine. Brito is a scientist at Oregon Health & Science University.

The study was done in Brazil with 23 elderly people who had high blood pressure. All of them had been taking blood pressure medicine for at least four months.

They were asked to cycle on a stationary bike three times a week for ten weeks. Some did it between 7 and 10 in the morning. Others did it between 5 and 8 in the evening.

The Results of the Study

The researchers found interesting results. The two types of blood pressure – one when the heart beats and the other when it rests – reacted differently.

The resting blood pressure dropped the same for both groups. But the beating blood pressure dropped only in those who exercised in the evening.

They also studied the workings of the nervous system that controls blood pressure.

They found that evening exercises improved the way the nervous system responded to changes in blood pressure. This could explain why evening exercises were more helpful.

Takeaways from the Study

Brito suggests that people who need to control their blood pressure quickly, or those who don’t benefit much from exercise, might want to try exercising in the evening.

This study supports another one done earlier on middle-aged men with high blood pressure. But now they understand why evening exercises work better.

This discovery could change how doctors advise patients about exercise timing. It’s an exciting step forward in helping people manage their health better.
