Researchers from the University of Vermont have some exciting news for those who love their yogurt full-fat.

Their recent study indicates that if you are middle-aged or older and dealing with prediabetes, eating full-fat yogurt every day could help control your sugar levels.

This study is expected to be discussed in more detail at a big meeting of physiologists, or scientists who study the human body, in Long Beach, California.

Understanding Prediabetes and Its Risks

Prediabetes is a health condition where your blood sugar level is high, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

If you are told you have prediabetes, it doesn’t mean you’ll surely develop type 2 diabetes. However, it is a warning sign that changes in lifestyle, including diet and exercise, may be needed.

Dietary Advice Around Dairy and Fat

In recent years, health groups like the American Heart Association have advised people to choose low-fat or non-fat dairy foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt.

This advice is part of what’s called a “heart healthy” diet. It is based on the idea that eating less fat helps to prevent weight gain and diseases like diabetes.

But this study suggests that full-fat dairy products, specifically yogurt, might be good for controlling blood sugar. This adds to the growing debate around the role of dietary fat in our diets and health.

How the Study Was Carried Out

The Vermont team worked with volunteers between the ages of 45 and 75. These folks mostly had prediabetes.

Prediabetes means their blood sugar levels were higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes.

Their average blood sugar level, when they hadn’t eaten for a while (called fasting glucose), was 101.1 milligrams per deciliter. For context, a fasting glucose level between 100 and 125 is considered prediabetes.

In this study, the same group of people ate three servings of plain, full-fat yogurt every day for three weeks. Then they switched to eating three servings of fat-free yogurt every day for another three weeks.

The Results of the Study

After the three weeks of eating full-fat yogurt, the average blood sugar level of the participants had dropped to 97.7.

This is within the “normal” range for blood sugar levels. In contrast, the fat-free yogurt did not show the same effect on blood sugar levels.

What Does This Mean for You?

This study suggests that full-fat yogurt might be good for people with prediabetes. It appears to help lower blood sugar levels, bringing them back to the normal range.

This challenges the idea that we should always opt for low-fat or non-fat dairy products.

The researchers are hopeful that this initial finding will encourage more studies. They believe that more research will help us understand the relationship between dairy fat and blood sugar control better.

This is good news if you enjoy full-fat yogurt. It could be an easy and tasty way to help keep your blood sugar levels in check.

As always, if you have concerns about your diet and health, it’s best to speak with a healthcare provider.

Remember, the foods you eat can have a big impact on your health. In addition to a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, and stress management are crucial for overall well-being.

In conclusion, if you love full-fat yogurt and you’re dealing with prediabetes, this might be your green light to enjoy it daily.

However, it’s always a good idea to chat with your doctor about these things and keep an eye on your health.
