Diabetes is a health condition that affects how your body uses sugar.
In type 2 diabetes, your body either can’t make enough of a hormone called insulin or can’t use it properly.
When this happens, too much sugar stays in your blood, which can cause health problems over time.
A Cool Solution: The Fitterfly Diabetes CGM Program
In a world where we use smartphones and apps for almost everything, why not use them to help manage diabetes?
A recent study published in JMIR Diabetes shows that the Fitterfly Diabetes CGM Program can do just that!
Fitterfly is an app that works with a special technology called Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM).
CGM allows users to keep track of their blood sugar levels throughout the day. But Fitterfly does more than just track blood sugar.
Fitterfly also gives you personalized advice on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes.
That means the app suggests what you should eat, how you should exercise, and what behaviors you might need to change. All of these are based on your own blood sugar levels!
How Was the Fitterfly App Tested?
Researchers wanted to see if the Fitterfly app really works, so they did a study with 109 people who have type 2 diabetes. The study lasted for 90 days, or about three months.
First, the researchers looked at each participant’s blood sugar levels for a week using the CGM. Next, the Fitterfly app and a team of coaches gave the participants advice on diet and exercise.
Then, the researchers checked if the participants could maintain these changes for the next three months.
What Were the Results?
The results were pretty amazing! By the end of the 90-day program, about 85% of the participants had lower blood sugar levels.
Their blood sugar was measured using something called hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), which gives an average of your blood sugar levels over the past three months.
On average, the participants’ HbA1c levels dropped by 1.2%. Even better, those who started the program with higher HbA1c levels saw a reduction of about 2.6%.
But the improvements didn’t stop at blood sugar levels. The participants also lost weight during the program! They lost an average of 2.05 kg (or about 4.5 pounds), and their Body Mass Index (BMI) also went down.
Why is This Important?
The CEO and co-founder of Fitterfly, Dr. Arbinder Singal, believes that digital tools like the Fitterfly app can change how we manage diabetes.
The Fitterfly program is especially useful in a country like India, where type 2 diabetes is a major health concern.
The Fitterfly app’s personalized approach and easy-to-use interface make it a promising tool for managing diabetes.
Plus, those who interacted more with the app had even better results, especially in terms of weight loss. This shows that digital programs can be helpful and effective if users engage with them.
Final Thoughts
Managing diabetes can be challenging, but apps like Fitterfly are making it easier. By providing personalized advice and tracking blood sugar levels, Fitterfly can help users make positive changes to their lifestyles.
The success of this program might also inspire similar digital solutions for other health conditions in the future. Who knows what other exciting things technology might bring to the field of health care?
