Scientists find a new way to treat resistant high blood pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition that can increase your risk of heart disease, kidney problems, and stroke.

Lifestyle changes and medication are the usual ways to treat high blood pressure. However, some people’s blood pressure does not go down even with these treatments.

Recently, a new procedure has been developed that uses a small balloon to send ultrasound energy to the kidney’s main blood vessel.

This procedure, called renal denervation, can be done under the skin and is similar to placing a stent. Renal denervation can help to cut off the nerve supply to the kidney and reduce the activity of overactive kidney nerves.

A clinical study was conducted with 224 people who had uncontrolled high blood pressure.

The trial showed that renal denervation, used alone or as a supplement to medication, was effective in treating high blood pressure.

Researchers found that the ultrasound renal denervation procedure reduced blood pressure and provided an alternative to medication for patients with hypertension.

The ultrasound renal denervation procedure involves inserting a small, flexible catheter through a small puncture in the wrist or groin.

The catheter is then placed in the artery supplying the kidney, and either radiofrequency or ultrasound energy is delivered to the tissue surrounding the artery for several seconds.

This reduces nerve activity and helps lower blood pressure.

A previous study had shown that ultrasound renal denervation decreases blood pressure in people with mild to moderate and resistant hypertension.

This larger study done in people with uncontrolled hypertension expanded upon these findings and showed that ultrasound renal denervation can be an effective way to lower blood pressure.

In summary, the ultrasound renal denervation procedure can be an alternative to medication for treating high blood pressure in people with uncontrolled hypertension.

The procedure is minimally invasive and can be done using a small balloon to cut off the nerve supply to the kidney. Top of FormBottom of Form
