Yogurt may help reduce high blood pressure

Heart disease is the leading cause of death, and high blood pressure is a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

A recent study from the University of Maine and elsewhere found yogurt consumption can help lower blood pressure in older adults with elevated levels.

Diet has long been suggested as a means of lowering blood pressure levels and diets to improve health are very popular.

In the study, the team examined the link between yogurt consumption and blood pressure among older adults with and without high blood pressure.

They analyzed cross-sectional data for 915 adults (average age 62.1 years). Approximately 62% of the people had high blood pressure as defined as 140/90 mmHg.

The team revealed strong reductions in systolic blood pressure among those with high blood pressure who consumed yogurt.

The study was the first to ask whether yogurt reduces blood pressure for persons who exhibit normal blood pressure levels.

There was no improvement linked to eating yogurt in individuals with normal blood pressure.

Previous work indicated a positive link between the Mediterranean Diet and better cognitive function and between other dairy products and the lowering of blood pressure in persons free from a history of stroke and kidney disease.
