Scientists from PMRC Research Center at NICH found that eating fiber bread could help with the management of diabetes.
The research is published in the Journal of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and was conducted by Fatima Nizami et al.
In the study, the team examined the effects of soluble fiber-rich bread on lowering blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipid levels.
They tested 20 people with type 2 diabetes in this study. They were provided with this bread (test diet) to replace their usual breakfast bread and chapati for lunch and dinner.
The intakes of other foods as well as medications were unchanged.
The team measured the fasting and 2 hours postprandial blood sugar, fasting serum cholesterol, and triglyceride levels before and after 4 weeks of intervention.
Blood sugar and blood pressure were checked every week. Quality of life was assessed with the help of questionnaire, which was asked before and after the end of the intervention.
The team found that blood sugar control, both fasting and postprandial, improved strongly during the intervention.
Satisfactory reduction of blood pressure, as well as serum cholesterol and triglyceride level, was also found in the participants.
The medicines were reduced strongly and quality of life improved in all participants.
None of these people complained of any gut discomfort during their consumption of this bread for 4 weeks.
The findings suggest that the use of soluble fiber-rich bread helps to control blood sugar, hyperlipidemia, and blood pressure which are elevated in poorly controlled diabetics.
Thus, integrated improvement will improve the quality of life, reduce the cost of drugs as well as help to avoid the harmful effects of drugs.
