Everyone has at least a little bit of brown fat (or BAT, brown adipose tissue). Unlike regular old white fat, which stores calories, brown-fat cells burn energy and produce heat.
Now researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences provide good news for those who want to activate their brown fat.
A natural compound in mulberry, called “rutin,” can activate the brown fat in our bodies to increase metabolism and facilitate weight loss.
The new study is published in The FASEB Journal.
The researchers used both genetically obese mice and mice with diet-induced obesity as models.
These mice were fed a regular diet, and supplemental rutin (1 mg/ml) was added to their drinking water.
Rutin treatment significantly reduced overweight, increased energy expenditure, and improved metabolic functions in both the genetically obese mice and the mice with diet-induced obesity.
Researchers suggest that brown fat is very important in human metabolism.
The beneficial effects of rutin on brown-fat-mediated metabolic improvement have evoked a substantial interest in the potential treatment for obesity and its related diseases, such as diabetes.
In line with this idea, discovery of more safe and effective brown fat activators is desired to deal with obesity and its related diseases.
